Colombia - Arepas

Arepas are a famous street food.

Aneri's note: Colombia’s tourism has really picked up over the past decade. With its colorful culture, architecture, nature and of course food, it’s definitely on my list of places to visit!

Arepas

Difficulty level (1-10): 5

Arepas are a real tasty snack and fairly easy to prepare. Only 3 real ingredients!

Ingredients

Masarepa - 1 1/2 cups (you cannot use cornmeal, must be white pre-cooked corn flour)

Cotija - 1/2 cup

Water - 1 3/4 cups water

Oil - 1 TSP

Salt to taste

Butter - 2 TSP

1. Combine masarepa, cotija, water and oil in a medium bowl and knead with hands until dough is formed.

2. Take a small amount and flatten between your hands, slapping into a pancake shape. Add water if necessary.

3. Set aside all arepas for 5 minutes

4. Melt butter in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add arepas and cook until one side is browned, about 5 minutes. Flip to the other side and repeat.

5. Enjoy!
